The Development of the New Zealand Hip Protector

Hip protective garments are now being manufactured in Auckland New Zealand by High Tech Bodywear Ltd. using ‘high tech’ technology. The state of the art composite materials used to manufacture the ‘hip protectors’ was developed in conjunction with the Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Auckland. The hip protector ‘project’ won the top student award in 1997.

Special features of the Hip Protector

By combining the ‘high tech’ technology of Impactwear hip protectors with a specially designed garment focussing on comfort, Impactwear has created a unique product especially for the needs of older people.

The ‘high tech’ technology involved has allowed for a very thin but very strong and effective hip protective shield Impactwear hip protectors are invisible under clothing.

In 1999, High Tech Bodywear Ltd. received a ‘Special Commendation’ Sony Excellence in Technology Award, at the Westpac Trust and Enterprise North Shore Business Awards.

The Development of the Hip Protector

An entirely new garment has been designed and sized especially for older men and women. Advice was sought from design consultants but more importantly Impactwear listened and responded to feedback from Impactwears sternest critics, older people themselves. Impactwear is grateful for their constructive comments, as they have enabled Impactwear to create very comfortable and effective garments specifically for them.

What makes Impactwear garments ‘special?’ In three words; effectiveness, comfort, and cost.

For maximum effectiveness, the pockets containing the hip protectors are carefully positioned so that they are over the hip area in all sizes for both men and women. Impactwear Hip Protectors are comfortable - Impactwear Hip Protectors cannot by felt by the wearer owing to comfortable padding in the hip pockets which moulds to all body shapes and a large gusset allows for the use of incontinence products if necessary
The high quality cotton and elastane fabric ‘breathes’ while allowing for a slim trim fit plus acid resistant cotton ensures longer lasting seams.
They are competatively priced compared to other models and also cost effective for funding agencies by avoiding the high costs associated with hip fracture treatment and rehabilitation.
